On Sunday the 23rd of January I was privileged to represent Hasmonean as Head Girl, along with the Head Boy, to take part in the Barnet Holocaust Memorial Day Service at Middlesex University. The Service took place in the atrium at Middlesex University, and was an emotional experience which highlighted the importance of making sure that the horrors of the Holocaust are never forgotten.
The speeches were varied and moving, and were interspersed with songs from two Jewish choirs. Mala Tribich, a survivor of the camps told her harrowing story, which was inspiring to all present. The sense of solidarity felt by everyone, whether they were survivors, children, adults, Jews, or non Jews, was incredible to witness. Instead of it feeling like a speaker conveying information to a detached audience, the atmosphere was that of unity. The whole ceremony reinforced the need to do everything we can to keep alive the memory of those who perished, and the importance of never forgetting such a recent and tragic event.

Take a look at www.theholocaustexplained.org a groundbreaking new website which has been launched for young people to learn about the holocaust. This is an initiative of the London Jewish Cultural Centre, in consultation with Yad Vashem, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv.
